| The Friendship Club of
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle was formed at Philo's eight years ago when the family of a deaf
little girl in La Cruz asked for help. After we raised enough money to buy
hearing aids and pay for speech therapy, we kept on going, paying for braces, x-rays,
laboratory tests, medication, surgery, a prosthetic leg, eye exams, eye glasses, and
much more for children and adults in the La Cruz/Bucerias area. In years when we have had
a surplus of funds, we are able to buy school uniforms and supplies for children who would
not otherwise be able to attend school. All this is possible because of the generous
donations given to us by area residents and visitors to Philo's. The pictures below are
from a recent glasses distribution at the La Cruz Senior Center. Please click on
them to enlarge. We also raise money by
selling original and matted water colors and notecards reproduced from this art,
given to us by Muriel Taylor.
Two annual fund raising events account for a large part of our financial support. Every
February, a Mexican Benefit is held at Philo's with all proceeds going to the Friendship
Club. Every May, we participate in the Altruism Festival at the Marriott Hotel, sponsored
by the Marriott and the U.S. Consular Agency. This event brings together outstanding
restaurants and charity organizations of the Banderas Bay area.
Working with Philo, a founding member of the Friendship Club of La Cruz, we also
collect used eye glasses, which are distributed in La Cruz and Bucerias, and used
computers and printers, which are given to the local public schools. |
